What is a kura?

A kura is the thick-walled storehouse where a Japanese family kept what mattered — lacquer, textiles, tools, tea things — safe for generations. When one is finally opened, out comes a cross-section of Japanese life, ordinary and extraordinary. That is this shop: not one narrow specialty, but the whole breadth of what Japan has made and used, chosen by an eye that knows the difference.
